Comer to hold FBI chief Christopher Wray in contempt for refusing Biden subpoena

July 8, 2023

James Comer, the chairman of the House Oversight Committee and a Republican from Kentucky, submitted a resolution on Wednesday calling for the impeachment of FBI Director Christopher Wray for failing to comply with a subpoena for an informant file about a purported $5 million bribery scheme involving Vice President Biden.

Comer stated in a statement, “We have been clear that the FBI must deliver the unclassified FD-1023 record to the custody of the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability.” The FBI has so far refused to abide by our legally filed subpoena and even refused to acknowledge the existence of the record until a week ago.

Comer stated in his statement on Wednesday that “the case is not closed as the White House, Democrats, and the FBI would have the American people believe.” “The FBI compiled this record using information from a reliable informant who has been paid six figures and has worked with the FBI for more than ten years. The informant spoke with the foreigner directly who claimed to have bought off then-Vice President Biden.

On Monday, FBI representatives paid a visit to the Capitol and gave Comer and Democratic Ranking Member Jamie Raskin permission to see the partially redacted document. In a statement released on Wednesday, Comer reiterated his demand that Wray “produce the unclassified FD-1023 record to the custody of the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability” in order to comply with the subpoena. Comer claimed that this action was insufficient.

Bill Barr, a former attorney general, added on Tuesday that Democrats were mistaken to assert that the inquiry was “terminated.”

“That isn’t true. It wasn’t shut down,” Barr told The Federalist, adding that US Attorney David Weiss “referred it to Delaware for further examination.”

Two people with knowledge of the situation told CBS News after Comer unveiled the contempt resolution that the FBI is willing to let the entire committee view the document in a secure setting. It was unclear right away whether that solution would meet Comer’s requirements and stop the contempt case.
