ILHAN OMAR IN DEEP WATERS AS SHE FACES ANOTHER CENSURE & OTHER PRIMARY CHALLENGERS

May 16, 2024

extreme left Rep. Ilhan Omar is confronted with yet another censure in the House of Representatives due to her overtly anti-Semitic sentiments, despite the fact that she is unpopular with the Jewish community in her Minnesota district and faces a formidable primary opponent.

According to The Epoch Times, it can be difficult for any person to represent a diverse constituency with a sizable Muslim community and a large proportion of Jewish votes. The 5th Congressional District, which Omar has served since 2019, is home to 19 mosques and 11 synagogues.

19% of Democratic voters in Minnesota cast “uncommitted” ballots in the March presidential primary, expressing disapproval at President Joe Biden’s refusal to demand a truce in the Israel-Hamas conflict.

One of the first Muslims elected to Congress, Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) presented the motion of censure against Omar. He justified the criticism by pointing to comments she made on April 25 at Columbia University, in which she called some Jewish students “pro-genocide.”

The United States considers Hamas to be a terrorist organisation. On October 7, its fighters invaded Israel, murdering about 1,300 people and kidnapping over 250 more, including some Americans. When Israeli troops presented media with video footage from the attacks, many of them called the crimes against defenceless Israeli citizens and children savage and brutal.

In addition, Omar recently gave a speech akin to the one she gave at Columbia University at a protest encampment at the University of Minnesota, which is in her district. Her daughter, a student at Columbia, was one of the pro-Palestinian demonstrators Omar addressed, and she was there to support her.

Her spokeswoman has informed various media outlets that Omar unequivocally condemned anti-Semitism and bigotry against all Jewish students. However, her use of the term “pro-genocide” prompted the latest censure action by Republicans. But the move to censure was also political fodder for Omar’s Democratic challengers.

In the 2022 primary, Omar defeated Samuels, a former member of the Minneapolis City Council, by a margin of two percentage points.

In the year 2019, Rep. Greg Steube, a Republican from Florida, proposed a resolution that condemned Omar’s anti-Semitic remarks.

The resolution repeated some of her remarks. For example, Omar tweeted in 2012, saying, “May Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel. Israel has hypnotised the world.”

“Drawing attention to the apartheid Israeli regime is far from hating Jews,” Omar wrote in a post from 2018.

The remarks were criticised at the time by then-House Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi, who said, “We condemn these remarks and call upon Congresswoman Omar to apologise immediately.” That was in February 2019, Omar.
